Elisabeth Kübler-Ross: The rise and fall of the five stages of grief

  • He worked with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and co-authored her last book, On Grief and Grieving, and an interview he gave to the Harvard Business Review at the start of the pandemic went viral, as people sought to understand their emotional responses to the crisis.
  • She wanted to talk more widely about death and dying: helping terminally ill people come to terms with their diagnoses, helping caregivers and family members listen to them and support them while dealing with their own emotions, and encouraging everybody to live their life as fully as possible in the knowledge that their time on Earth is finite.
  • In Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's last book, On Grief and Grieving, she wrote that her theory of stages was "never meant to help tuck messy emotions into neat packages".

  • Accel’s Amy Saper and Bessemer’s Talia Goldberg will lead the Pitchdeck Teardown, going over the look, feel and information provided within individual pitchdecks to share what they look for, what they don’t want to see, and how to get the best outcome when you send a VC your deck.

  • The two-day show features more than 50 sessions, but don’t worry; attendees will get transcripts for all of them.

Sophia Bendz is leaving Atomico to join Berlin-based seed firm Cherry Ventures

  • More personnel changes in European early-stage VC, this time it’s the latest career move of former Spotify global director of marketing Sophia Bendz, who is leaving Atomico to join Berlin’s Cherry Ventures.
  • Her stated reason for leaving the London VC firm — which mainly does Series A and Series B rounds — is that, having made the difficult transition from seasoned operator to venture capitalist, she wants to focus on seed-stage where she can do more deals and work closely with founders and their teams at a much earlier stage.
  • Swedish Bendz is already a prolific angel investor, with a total of 44 deals in the last 9 years!
  • I wouldn’t read too much into that but it speaks to the fact that a Series A and beyond firm does many fewer deals per year than a seed investor, and likewise the investment process is very different, too.

NASA’s next Mars mission has now burned nearly half of its launch window

  • "A liquid-oxygen sensor line presented off-nominal data during the Wet Dress Rehearsal, and additional time is needed for the team to inspect and evaluate," NASA said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, in response to a query from Ars. A source in Florida indicated that the issue was related to the Atlas V rocket's Centaur upper stage, which is fueled with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.
  • NASA originally set a launch window from July 17 to August 11, the optimal period for the rocket to launch, and for Perseverance to reach Mars within about six months.
  • If the Perseverance mission misses this launch window, it would be delayed 26 months, at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, until the next Earth-Mars conjunction in 2022.

Coronavirus treatments: What we know after 6 months - Business Insider

  • Now, several promising treatments have started human testing along with more than a dozen vaccine candidates, and some trials have already identified effective coronavirus drugs.
  • A pair of high-quality studies showed in June no benefit in taking the malaria pills for hospitalized patients or as a preventive treatment for people exposed to the virus.
  • By the time a drug like dexamethasone is used, it's working to confront a runaway immune response, rather than fight the viral infection itself.
  • More than a dozen coronavirus vaccine candidates have already started clinical testing in 2020, and by the end of the year, there should be more than 30 experimental vaccines in human trials, according to a Business Insider review.
  • If the vaccine works, the body will start pumping out antibodies designed to fight that virus and protect against infection.

Strap in -- a virtual Tour de France kicks off this weekend on the online racing platform Zwift

  • In fact, beginning this coming weekend, 23 top men’s teams and 17 women’s teams will participate in a virtual version of the event that’s being hosted by six-year-old Zwift, after it was chosen by the official race organizer of the real tour, Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), as its partner on the event.
  • Though Zwift has staged virtual races before —  including the Giro d’Italia, which is basically the Tour de France for Italy, and the Vuelta a Espana, an annual multi-stage race in Spain — it “doesn’t get any bigger than this,” said Min, who told us the idea was hatched six weeks ago with ASO and that Zwift has been working furiously to prepare for the race ever since.
  • It already has nearly two million accounts, and while subscribers ebb and flow, depending on the time of year, the virtual Tour is an opportunity for some of those riders to “reengage,” Min says, adding that Zwift has been growing 50 percent year over year, and has unsurprisingly seen pick-up accelerate throughout the pandemic.

Simple Introduction to Data Science

  • EDA is a crucial step to perform before diving into machine learning or statistical modeling stage.
  • It provides an important base framework for understanding and the context needed to develop an appropriate model for the problem at hand and to correctly interpret its results.
  • On the other hand, if it's a statistical model, take a good look at the final variables you have used in your model and check their business relevance along with the results of the model evaluation metrics.
  • Be sure to prepare proper documentation depicting the results of the model on development, validation, and out of time samples which can clearly show what the Gini/KS or other evaluation metrics are.
  • Either way, all the stages are important for the development of a robust and reliable model which can help us tackle the business problem at hand.
