AI for Good — Medical Image Analyses for Malaria Detection

  • Deep Learning models, or if I have to say more specifically, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have proven to be really effective in a wide variety of computer vision tasks.
  • You can go through an very interesting Research paper ‘Pre-trained convolutional neural networks as feature extractors toward improved parasite detection in thin blood smear images’ by Rajaraman et al.
  • Lets see what data we are using for this problem set , I am very thankful to researchers at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC), part of National Library of Medicine (NLM) who have carefully collected and annotated this dataset of healthy and infected blood smear images.
  • The fast.ai library provides many useful functions that enable us to quickly and easily build neural networks and train our models.

5 Tips You Can’t Afford to Miss as a Dev Rookie

  • I will actually address this article to people that already know how to code but perhaps miss some direction on what to devote time when self-learning.
  • Good code review is the best way to learn.
  • In learning concepts and principles pay more attention to anti-patterns: what not to do, and what to avoid.
  • Following anti-patterns will always make your code slightly less crappy.
  • Depending on the set of anti-patterns and how compliant you are with them - your code will be more or less improved.
  • Feedback loop means all the necessary steps to reproduce certain behavior starting from scratch to point when you get feedback - either code is working or not.
  • The ideal situation is to try split longer sequences of work into short ones - making clear save point where you know you can always start from.

Worried about dementia? Get exercising

  • Being physically fit may sharpen the memory and lower our risk of dementia, even if we do not start exercising until we are middle-aged or older, according to two stirring new studies of the interplay among exercise, ageing, aerobic fitness and forgetting.
  • The researchers then checked records from nursing homes and specialised memory clinics to see which participants developed dementia during a 20-year follow-up period and if fitness affected their risk for the disease.
  • In that experiment, which was published recently in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, tested what types of exercise might be most effective at increasing both aerobic fitness and memory performance in healthy, older adults.
  • In essence, the findings suggest that "it is not too late" for middle-aged or older people to start exercising and protect their memories, says Jennifer Heisz, an associate professor at McMaster University who oversaw the new study.
