Launch HN: Datafold (YC S20) – Diff Tool for SQL Databases

  • One of the biggest pain points in developing ETL pipelines – chains of jobs that move, clean, merge and aggregate analytical data – has been regression testing: verifying how a change in source code (mostly, SQL) affects the produced data.Early in my career, as an on-call data engineer at Lyft, I accidentally introduced a breaking code change while attempting to ship a hotfix at 4AM to a SQL job that computed tables for core business analytics.
  • the hotfix branch, I would have immediately spotted the alarming divergence and avoided merging the breaking change.Without a diffing tool, the typical options for regression testing are: (1) Data “unit tests” (e.g. check primary key uniqueness, ensure values are within interval, etc.) – these are helpful, but costly investment.

Analysis: Baseball's fumbled return has never been a better metaphor for American life

  • When fans might once have woken up to read last night's scores, they are instead tuning in to find out whether their team's game has been postponed after another flurry of positive tests from the ballparks.
  • The Miami Marlins has seen 18 players test positive and had to put its infected troops onto sleeper buses to get them back home.
  • The fact that so many players have been infected by the disease so quickly suggests something else even more ominous — it simply isn't safe to move around the country.
  • Baseball's return, like Trump's response to the pandemic, so far looks like a swing and a miss.
  • A red cloud hung over the capital as the city's residents -- around 4 million people -- began to uncover the scale of the damage to their houses, sought treatment for their wounds and frantically called loved ones to see if they were safe.

Why is model validation so darn important and how is it different from model…

  • A part of the development dataset is kept aside and the model is then tested on it to see how it is performing on the unseen data from the similar time segment using which it was built in the first place (i.e. In Time validation).
  • If the model has not gone through basic out of time validation tests, then it might be possible that the model is an overfitted model which performed well on the development sample but fails on unseen data.
  • Once the model is deployed, the model monitoring processes ensure the relevance of the model by judging the population distribution and also recording back-dated error % comparisons between the model predictions and actuals data as soon as that starts coming in to make sure that the model performance is in the acceptable range.

'Big Brother' returns with color-coded pods and no hugs amid coronavirus pandemic

  • The housemates identities are still under wraps -- even host Julie Chen Moonves said she doesn't know who the 16 people are who will be living in the house.
  • The potential castmates have been quarantined leading up to the premiere, according to Chen Moonves.
  • Production flew in "a bunch of people, more than 16," Chen told CBSN Los Angeles.
  • In a separate interview with SiriusXM, Chen Moonves explained that production staff who are essential to get the show on air wear masks and take weekly Covid-19 tests.
  • Crew also wear color-coded lanyards and can only be in the areas that are marked with their color.
  • Reflecting on the 20 years since "Big Brother" debuted in the US, Chen Moonves said her approach to hosting has evolved over time.
  • Chen Moonves said she's grown into the role.

SpaceX just launched a full-size Starship rocket prototype hundreds of feet above Texas - Business Insider

  • The aerospace company, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, launched and landed an early prototype of a potentially revolutionary rocket system called Starship at 7:57 p.m. ET on Monday.
  • The flight occured at SpaceX's expanding rocket factory, development, and test site in Boca Chica, a relatively remote region at the southeastern tip of Texas.
  • LabPadre, which hosted a live feed of SpaceX's launch site featuring multiple camera views, also recorded the flight.
  • However, as last year's test launch of an early Starship prototype called Starhopper showed, the flights of even experimental vehicles (shown above) can impress: On August 27, Starhopper soared to a similar height as SN5, translated across a launch site, and landed on a nearby concrete pad.
  • Musk said after the flight of SN5 that the next phase of testing won't fly prototypes very high, at least initially.

Victoria shuts the door too late

  • Businesses are closing as the entire state of Victoria enters an even tougher lockdown from Wednesday night.
  • Daniel Andrews has announced a $5000 fine for Victorians who have tested positive for the virus but aren’t at home when authorities come calling.
  • Presumably the size of the new potential fine will distract attention from the extent of the state’s failure to enforce previous regulations requiring people to self-isolate if they have the coronavirus.
  • Its base case scenario is for unemployment rising to about 10 per cent later this year due to further job losses in Victoria and more people elsewhere in Australia looking for jobs.
  • The Reserve Bank has held the official interest rate at 0.25 per cent, but declared it will start buying government bonds again on Wednesday to keep the cost of borrowing at record lows.

MLB says 13 St. Louis Cardinals players and staff tested positive for Covid-19

  • The Cardinals have been in quarantine since last Thursday and will stay in Milwaukee, and their personnel will continue to be tested daily, MLB said.
  • The outbreak among Cardinals' players and staff raises further questions about MLB's plans to safely hold the season amid the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The league's extensive protocols for holding the season included banning high-fives and spitting by players and keeping fans out of stadiums.
  • In contrast, the NHL, NBA and WNBA have restarted their leagues without positive tests by holding all games in "bubbles," where players are consistently tested, are required to masks and remain apart from the public.
  • Manfred has said that holding the baseball season in a "bubble" would not have worked because MLB has large teams and wants to hold a 60-game season.

St. Louis Cardinals executive says there's no proof players went to a casino prior to outbreak

  • John Mozeliak, the St. Louis Cardinals' president of baseball operations, told reporters there is no proof that anyone went to a casino.
  • The team has been in quarantine in Milwaukee since Thursday and seven players and six staff members have since tested positive.
  • This latest outbreak comes as the MLB attempts to hold the season despite positive cases being identified in players on multiple teams.
  • Last week, 21 players and staff on the Miami Marlins tested positive, which resulted in their season being put on hold.
  • As outbreaks among various teams continue, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred warned union leader Tony Clark during a Friday call that if the league and players don't do a better job of following Covid-19 protocols and managing the virus, Manfred could shut down the shortened season, ESPN reported.
