Don't Storm Area 51, Begs the Webmaster of the UFO Kingdom

  • Joerg Arnu loves the secretive military base, documents it on an exhaustive fan site, and wants people to visit—just not all at once.
  • Said festival had spun off from a joke Facebook event, a suggestion gone viral that a herd of humans could break into Area 51 and learn the military base's alien secrets.
  • Today, the website is a sprawling operation: It has extensive history sections, pilot audio captured on scanners, satellite images Arnu commissioned, trip reports, maps, and panoramas taken from the one mountain peak—Tikaboo—from where you can see inside Area 51.
  • When I visited last October, Arnu and I witnessed two jets flying Star Wars–like around mountain walls, and in the evenings, from my campsite, I saw lights—from military tests that made me fully understand why people think UFOs live here.

Uber is bringing its self-driving cars to Dallas

  • Uber will begin testing its self-driving cars in Dallas, Texas in November, the company announced Tuesday.
  • The vehicles will be operated by human drivers in downtown Dallas to start out, collecting mapping data and capturing driving scenarios which Uber’s engineers will then reproduce in simulation.
  • Uber wants to be seen as approaching its self-driving tests with an abundance of caution since a fatal crash in Tempe, Arizona, involving one of its autonomous vehicles in March 2018.
  • Police later said the safety driver was streaming The Voice on her phone at the time of the crash.
  • The company was ultimately cleared of any formal wrongdoing by local authorities, but the US National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating and expects to release its findings later this year.
  • Testing officially resumed nine months later, with the company’s Volvo SUVs operating in a closed loop in downtown Pittsburgh, where Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group is headquartered.

Here are some of the upgrades coming to the Air Force's oldest bomber

  • As part of the contract, Raytheon will work with prime contractor Boeing to replace the radar and radome, as well as putting in new displays, said Michael Riggs, Boeing's B-52 radar modernization program manager.
  • So far, 60 of the 76 aircraft have received modifications, said Alan Williams, deputy B-52 program element monitor at Air Force Global Strike Command.
  • The Air Force is also adding Link 16 to the B-52, which is one of the last of the service's aircraft to get that NATO-standard communications link, said Scot Oathout, Boeing's bombers program director.
  • The service is in the process of a "form, fit, function replacement" for its current ALQ-172 electronic countermeasures system, or ECM, which will help solve problems with obsolescence and increase reliability without providing a capability upgrade, said Williams.

Your 'private' Instagram account isn't as private as you think. Your followers can still share and save your posts without your knowledge by using a surprisingly simple trick.

  • According to a report produced by BuzzFeed, the security of both Instagram and Facebook has, once again, come into question, thanks to a quick workaround that can be used to access content posted on (supposedly) private accounts.
  • According to the report, a follower of a private account can use a very simple loophole to access the exact address of a user's photo or video through the source code on the page — a trick which requires only a very crude understanding of browsers and HTML.
  • By inspecting the images and videos on a given page, it's possible to access a public URL — a URL that can be shared not just with those who don't follow a private user but even with people who aren't even logged in to Instagram.

  • Prosecutors had suggested Huffman spend one month in prison and pay a $20,000 fine.

Stock Price Prediction Intervals Using Monte Carlo Simulation

  • That’s were pairing Monte Carlo simulation and time series modeling can come in handy.
  • This means the stock price is integrated to the order 1 and will need to be differenced one time for modeling.
  • The residuals on the training data set appear stationary, but there are some big spikes giving long tails to the distribution of residuals.
  • The mean is the predicted stock price, because the residuals were centered at zero.
  • So what are potential applications of pairing Monte Carlo simulation and time series modeling in investing?
  • Prediction intervals generated using Monte Carlo simulation can be used to predict the probability that an option is in the money or if a stock is a buy, hold, or sell over you chosen time horizon (again, please do not start trying to trade options using this model or pursue any other type of investing strategy without careful consideration and back-testing).
