  • Congressional Democrats and Trump administration officials will resume talks aimed at hammering out a coronavirus relief bill on Monday afternoon, after missing a vital deadline to extend relief benefits to tens of millions of jobless Americans.

  • The extension of enhanced federal unemployment benefits has proved to be a major stumbling block in the talks, and a top Federal Reserve official warned that failure to secure some form of extension would result in a weaker economy.

  • The Trump administration is weighing whether to take unilateral actions if it doesn't come to an agreement with Congress on another economic relief bill, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

  • Discussions on a spending package between White House officials and top congressional Democrats are at an impasse on unemployment insurance, The New York Times reported.

No signs Trump has pandemic plan despite chilling warnings from administration's top doctors

  • Dr. Deborah Birx delivered a series of stunning warnings on CNN's "State of the Union" five months into a pandemic that the President once said posed no threat to Americans but has now killed more than 150,000 of them.
  • Birx defended herself on "State of the Union" after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she didn't have confidence in the veteran public health official because she was an appointee of a President who is spreading disinformation.
  • Trump's tweets followed a report by Vanity Fair last week that Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner worked on a secret national testing plan last spring before the approach was rejected, reportedly for political reasons, in favor of putting the responsibility for fighting the virus on individual governors.

Data Viz using Python and Tableau: from API call to Hosted Dashboard

  • In this article, we will leave behind the inline Jupyter Notebook charts and learn how to create hosted interactive charts using Tableau Public.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics API is a REST API that serves data based on unique query IDs. BLS query IDs are based on a number of factors, such as state and industry.
  • To find the query ID, you will need to browse to BLS Databases, Tables & Calculators and locate the category related to your data.
  • In the GitHup repo, there is a module name blspandas.py which has wrapper functions for cleaning and performing the HTTP POST request that retrieves the data (Credit: BD Economics). The below script calls these functions to create a list of query IDs and performs the HTTP request, and saves the results as a pandas dataframe.

Pelosi and Mnuchin dig in on stimulus positions ahead of scheduled Monday talks

  • Pelosi and Mnuchin, along with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, said they expect to meet Monday to resume discussions.
  • Pelosi reiterated comments from House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer last week that the $600 price tag on enhanced federal unemployment benefits is not a deal breaker for Democrats.
  • Mnuchin argued that the White House had proposed a one-week unemployment benefit extension of $600 as negotiations continued, but had been rebuffed by Democrats.
  • Without giving details, the Treasury secretary also said he and Meadows made "three or four" other offers to the Democrats to deal with enhanced unemployment.
  • Mnuchin had told reporters following talks on Saturday that "there's clearly a subset of issues where we both agree on," listing an extension of unemployment insurance, schools, the Paycheck Protection Program and jobs.

This is the only city in America where unemployment is actually down

  • Out of 389 metropolitan areas tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it's the only city in the nation where the unemployment rate hasn't risen over the past year.
  • City officials chalk that up to its biggest employers: health care providers, bourbon and tobacco producers, and makers of personal protective equipment.
  • But according to Mayor Watson, the city's major private employers compete in some of the few industries seeing economic gains during the pandemic and have been hiring as a result.
  • Owensboro's largest employer — its hospital, Owensboro Health — has been doing well financially throughout the pandemic, according to the mayor.
  • Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Candance Castlen Brake says the city is also centrally located between some of the nation's largest population centers, including Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Nashville and Indianapolis, which makes it an optimal distribution hub.
